The Needles - Isle of Wight

The Needles is one of the Isle of Wight’s most famous landmarks, with its dramatic trio of white chalk stacks rising from the sea alongside the iconic red-and-white lighthouse.
You can make your way down to Alum Bay beach via the steps, or, if you’re feeling brave, take the famous chairlift for spectacular views as you travel down the cliffside. From the beach, you can also take a boat trip out towards the Needles for an even closer look, or simply enjoy the stunning coastal views.
There’s plenty to keep the kids entertained too, with adventure golf, fairground rides, coloured sand souvenirs and glass-blowing demonstrations.

The beach can be reached via a 185-step staircase, or you can pay for the famous chairlift and enjoy the spectacular views as you travel down.
You can also explore the cliff tops and walk towards The Needles Old Battery, taking in those incredible coastal views along the way. If you are National Trust members a visit inside the Battery is free or roughly £8 if not.
If you want to turn it into a full-on family day out, there are plenty of activities you can add to your visit. Take the iconic chairlift down to the beach, hop on a boat trip to get up close to The Needles rocks and lighthouse, or let the kids choose from some of the other attractions.
They can make their own souvenir by filling a jar with the famous coloured Alum Bay sand, watch the glass blowing demonstrations at Alum Bay Glass or have a go at the Jurassic Adventure Golf. There are also rides including the Dino Jeep Safari, carousel and teacups.
So for me, that’s what makes The Needles such a great family day out – you can do a little or a lot, and there’s plenty to see and do. Even if you simply come for the views, it’s a place that really feels like a memorable day out.
⭐ Our family visit
We decided to make more of a day of it by taking the chair lift and boat trip

🪑 Chair Lift
The chairlift was definitely one of the highlights. Sitting next to my daughter nervously chatting as we made our way over the cliff edge, down towards the beach. A bit nerve-wracking but it gives you some amazing views. Then once you're down there you can enjoy the beach and, if you fancy it, take a boat trip for a completely different view of The Needles.

⛱️ The Beach
My daughter loved the crumbly cliff with its rainbow of colours. She found fragments of pink and yellow rock and came running over to show me. There were people sunbathing, having picnics on blankets on the sand and swimming in the sea with quite possibly the best views of the island.

⛵️ Boat Trip
We took the 20-minute boat cruise, which was the perfect relaxing way to get a close-up view of The Needles from the water. Our boat took us out into Alum Bay towards the famous chalk stacks and lighthouse, giving you a completely different perspective of the coastline. There was plenty of options to takes photos and the boat slows right down at its closest position.
If you're after a bit more excitement, there's also a 15min high-speed RIB trip, but we were really happy with the more leisurely cruise.
We took the chair lift back up to the top which has lots of activities, shops and cafes.

🍴 Food & Drink
We grabbed a quick lunch from the café, which was set up in a canteen-style format. You picked up a tray and moved along the counter, helping yourself to a selection of hot and cold food.
I did find it a little tricky to see everything that was on offer, though. You could easily choose something at the beginning, only to spot something you fancied more further along, but by then, you’ve already got something on your tray!
I also found the prices quite high. We mainly had pasties and drinks, and it came to around £40 for two adults and two children.
So, if you’re trying to keep the cost of your day down and would rather spend your money on the activities, I’d definitely recommend bringing a picnic. There are plenty of places to enjoy it, and you could always just grab a coffee or drink from one of the trailers while you’re there.

🚶♀️ Walking to the Old Battery
We decided to walk from The Needles towards the Old & New Batteries, and I really enjoyed this part of our visit. The cliff-top walk gives you some gorgeous views down towards the beach, of the colourful cliffs and out across the sea, where you can watch the boats heading out towards The Needles.

The scenery changes as you walk, and it was a lovely chance to take our time and enjoy the views away from the main attractions.
When we reached the Old Battery, we got in for free as it is a National Trust site so that was a real benefit to being member, plus we got a stamp to add to out NT passport. We explored the military building, including the old guns still in position and even went down into a dark tunnel to find an impressive view back towards The Needles themselves. There is a small cafe in the Old Battery which is a classic National Trust cafe serving light lunches, cakes, ice creams and drinks with both indoor and outdoor seating.

If you want what I think is one of the best views of The Needles, don't stop at the Old Battery!
We carried on further up the hill towards the New Battery, and on the left-hand side you'll find a little ledge where you can stop and look out across the sea. And honestly… wow! This gives you a breathtaking side-on view of The Needles and the lighthouse. It was one of my favourite viewpoints of the whole day and definitely worth the extra walk.
If you don't fancy the walk, there is a bus service to the Old Battery, and there is also disabled parking nearby, making it a good option for visitors who may not be able to manage the cliff walk.

For us, the walk was definitely worth doing. It's not just about getting to the Old Battery, the views along the route are a big part of the experience.
