Knypersley Reservoir Walk
Knypersley Reservoir Walk

Tucked away in Greenway Bank Country Park just south-east of Biddulph, Knypersley Reservoir is a great walk for all the family. It’s ideal if you enjoy being by the water but want a route that keeps everyone interested, especially children. The paths are easy to follow and there’s plenty to see along the way, including finding the Rapunzel Tower hidden among the trees, along with a secret waterfall.

The circular walk around the reservoir is about 3.5km, it is undulating and a little bumpy in parts but would be suitable or bikes, scooters and pushchairs. The woodland is full of wildlife, and it’s common to spot squirrels and robins, especially if you stop to lay down bird food and seeds.

Feeding the Wildlife

Whenever we visit Knypersley Reservoir, we always bring a little bag of bird seed and mealworms. My daughter loves sprinkling them in places as we walk, and it’s such a joy to see her excitement when squirrels or birds come along and eat what she’s left behind. It really makes her feel good, like she’s helping, and it’s lovely for us to be able to see the wildlife so close up.

☆ We get proper bird feed from amazon to take out, please only give suitable food when feeding wildlife☆

Warden’s Tower

Hidden among the trees is the Warden’s Tower, a three-storey gothic tower that looks like it belongs in a fairytale. Built in 1828 by John Bateman, it was originally used as a gamekeeper’s house and watch tower, though it has been disused for many years now.

The path winds up and around the tower, so you slowly climb closer to it, which really adds to the mystery, especially for children. We’ve always called it the Rapunzel Tower because it’s so easy to imagine her leaning out and throwing down her long hair. It’s one of those spots that makes the walk extra fun and sparks a bit of imagination along the way.

Car Park

The car park at Knypersley Reservoir is free, which is always a bonus, but it is quite small. There is additional parking along the road on the reservoir bridge, although these spaces can fill up quickly, especially at busier times.

Another good option is to park at the Greenway Bank car park, which is about halfway up the hill.

Facilities & Refreshments

At Greenway Bank car park there is a Visitor Centre with toilet facilities. Sometimes there is a coffee stand selling drinks and cakes but please note its not always there so don't rely on it.
