Bulkeley Hill Wood Walk

Bulkeley Hill woods are managed by the National Trust. With a number of different walks taking in these woods, you can do a small 3km circular or a longer walk taking in Bickerton Hill or Raw Edge. The woods offer a sheltered walk with amazing views of Cheshire.

🥾 Starting the Walk
We started our walk from Stone Road, where there's a layby with free parking, making it an easy place to start. You can walk the route clockwise or anticlockwise, but we chose to follow the 3km circular walk anticlockwise.
Heading into the woods, it was lovely and peaceful. My daughter enjoyed spotting all the different mushrooms growing on the trees and woodland floor, as well as collecting the obligatory sticks to use as walking sticks. Because apparently, no woodland walk is complete without finding the perfect stick!

🌳 Into the Woods
The walk starts off fairly straightforward, winding through the trees, but don't be fooled into thinking it's an easy, gentle stroll all the way around!
The path gets steeper, rougher and more uneven as you go, with some quite steep uphill sections. Sensible footwear is a must, and it's definitely not pushchair-friendly. You'll need to be prepared for a bit of a workout!

As we climbed higher, we were rewarded with some lovely views stretching across the Cheshire countryside. The path levels off for a good while at the top and there are a couple of view points to stop at. You do have to put in a bit of effort to reach the higher points, but I thought it was worth it.

⛰️ The Way Back Down
The downhill sections were just as steep in places, with uneven paths underfoot, so take your time and watch where you're putting your feet.
Eventually, we made our way back towards Stone Road and arrived at the car with slightly tired legs, plenty of fresh air and the feeling that we'd definitely earned our lunch!

One thing we did find a little confusing was the National Trust signage. You actually pass a National Trust sign three times along the route as the path takes you in and out of the woodland. We still managed to get the obligatory photo by the sign each time!

🥪 A Stop at Cholmondeley Farm Shop
After our walk, we drove to Cholmondeley Farm Shop, which has a lovely little café inside.
We were meeting my daughter after her Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) walk, so we decided to grab something from the takeaway menu and eat at the picnic tables outside while keeping an eye out for her arriving.
It was a lovely spot to stop after our walk, although I'd definitely like to go back and sit inside the café properly next time!

Our Verdict
For us, this was a lovely little 3km Cheshire adventure, with peaceful woodland paths, some challenging uphill sections and gorgeous countryside views along the way.
It's worth knowing that the terrain is steep and uneven in places, so it's not one for pushchairs or anyone wanting a completely flat, easy stroll. But if you fancy getting out into the Cheshire countryside and don't mind a bit of a climb, it's a lovely walk to try.
You could also combine it with a walk up Bickerton Hill to turn it into a longer countryside adventure.
