Our Visit
I booked the Frozen Voyage Escape Island as a birthday party for my daughter and her friends and it turned out to be one of the best party ideas we’ve ever had.
Hop on board the boat
The excitement began straight away as we arrived at Alderford Lake, got fitted with our life vests, and watched the safety video. The girls were bubbling with anticipation, but the real buzz came when we climbed into the boat. The short trip across the water to the island set the scene perfectly, and by the time we hopped off onto dry land, the girls were practically giddy with excitement.
Alone on the Island
What surprised me (in a good way!) was that once we were dropped off, it was just us on the island with only a walkie talkie for communication. At first, I thought a staff member might stay with us, but actually the setup worked brilliantly. Knowing we were being monitored on camera and could ask for help whenever we needed took away any worry, and the walkie talkie actually added to the adventure. Every time we called for a clue, the girls felt like real explorers radioing in for secret tips!
Puzzles were clever, varied, and fun
The escape challenge itself takes place around a wooden pirate ship that looks as if it has washed up on shore. The puzzles were clever, varied, and fun, from cracking codes to solving tricky riddles. At times it was a little challenging to work out which numbers went with which lock, but that was all part of the fun. What stood out most for me was watching the girls work together, bouncing ideas off each other, encouraging one another, and celebrating when they solved something.
Shrieks, laughter, and lots of frantic running about
One of the funniest moments of the whole experience came with the water challenge. The task was to transfer water from a huge butt to a pipe at the other end of the area using only a bucket filled with holes. Cue shrieks, laughter, and lots of frantic running about, it was absolutely hilarious and such a highlight of the day.
Waved the flag to signal victory
Although I chipped in here and there, the girls (all aged 10) were able to do most of it themselves with just the occasional nudge in the right direction. They were fully engaged for the whole time, and when they finally cracked the last clue, opened the treasure chest, and waved the flag to signal victory, they were bouncing with joy. It felt like such an achievement for them, and the smiles said it all.
Final Thoughts
The Frozen Voyage Escape Island was such a hit, fun, different, and genuinely memorable. As a birthday party idea, it couldn’t have worked better, but I’d also highly recommend it as a family day out. The concept of being left alone on an island that you can only reach (and leave!) by boat made it feel like a proper adventure.
Alderford Lake also has other escape island experiences designed for older children, families, and adult groups, so there’s something for everyone. If you’re after something exciting and a little unusual, it’s definitely worth checking out their website to see which one appeals to you.
There is lots more fun things to do at Alderford Lake too.
